What is MateSel?
MateSel is a tool that was developed by University of New England and is hosted on the Sheep Genetics website, helping to take mating selections to another level.
The program uses Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBVs), sire and dam pedigree to balance genetic gain while maintaining diversity.
To utilise MateSel you need to know:
a list of possible sires and dams
the desired gains you would like to achieve and
if want or need to put pressure on inbreeding
MateSel then runs a number of scenarios to get the best possible mating selections.
If you are interesting in using MateSel for your next joining season or you would like some more information please contact us!

The Land article
Our own Sally Martin was recently interviewed for a piece in The Land newspaper, showcasing the work we are doing with clients using MateSel as a predictive breeding tool.
"My passion is very much in working predominantly with sheep breeders in production and genetic areas"
"MateSel allows us to allocate rams and ewes together when making mating decisions.
We are using indexes and breeding values, and depending on what the breeder's breeding objective is, we can place more or less emphasis on the particular traits depending on where we are up to in the breeding program and what the ultimate goals are".
"The tools are there to make more informed decisions"
