Do you understand the responsiveness of your flock’s reproductive rate?
We know that ewes in better condition at joining, on average, conceive more lambs and therefore have a higher reproductive rate (foetus/100 ewes joined).
Did you know that this response in reproductive rate varies between flocks by as much as 13% and 60% more lambs for each extra condition score (CS).
So why is it important to understand responsiveness of your flock’s reproductive rate?
You can make a more informed decision around allocation of feed leading up to joining. Depending on your flock’s responsiveness, the cost of feeding ewes more leading up to joining may or may not be justified by additionional lambs conceived.
Identify the reproductive potential of your flock’s genetics. If improving reproduction rate is part of your breeding objective, knowing how your flock currently performs for this trait is an important first step.
