MateSel - where do syndicates fit in?
MateSel is designed to allocated ram and ewe mating as a single sire mate, AI or ET program. With the challenges of the past 4 months many breeders may not have adequate paddocks available for single sire mating.
I have recently looked at three clients predicted MateSel outcomes to the actual mating outcome with syndicate joining. The results were very similar, the key message is to make sure your sire syndicates are of similar genetic merit. You can still use the MateSel allocations to set up syndicate sire mating.
The two examples below used syndicate mating in 2021. The first joined for three weeks as single sire and then boxed mobs for another 2 weeks to ensure any sire failure was minimised, the second joined syndicates from the start of joining (5 weeks) and had similar genetic merit rams grouped together. The overall outcome is encouraging and should provide some reassurance for breeders.
The level of inbreeding was similar between the predicted MateSel allocations and actual mating in the three client flocks examined.
